CALLANISH VISITORS CENTRE

The mysterious Callanish (Calanais in Gaelic) Standing Stones were erected over 5000 years ago and are at least 500 years older than Stonehenge. They still determinedly hold the secret as to their exact purpose, althought it is widely believed that the stones collectively form a Druid Temple. There is also the argument that the place had great astronomical significance, however they are truly magnificent and, when you are there, leave you with a feeling of wonder and awe and, whilst the true origin and purpose of the stones will never be known, they proudly stand as a monument to the ingenuity, abilities and culture of the most ancient of Scots.

The Callanish Stones Visitor centre hosts a "Story of the Stones" exhibition. They have a wide variety of local crafts on display and have for many years now been selling a selection of our items.
